Stannite Michelle Rothwell: Redefining What’s Possible

On 24 September, we are proud to welcome back Stannite Michelle Rothwell, who will be speaking to pupils about courage, resilience, and the power of the human spirit.

Michelle is no stranger to taking on challenges - but she also believes in creating her own. Her self-devised test of endurance, now known as the Shelly Rothwell Round, is a feat that combines the beauty and brutality of the Lakes with the determination of someone who refuses to give up.

The challenge included:

🌊 A 10.5-mile swim across the full length of Lake Windermere – no wetsuit, 12.5°C water, 10 hours in the lake. She emerged with hypothermia but refused to stop.

🚴 A 112-mile cycle on the infamous Fred Whitton route, with 3,500m of relentless climbing.

🏔 A 66-mile run following the legendary Bob Graham Round – 42 peaks, 8,200m of ascent, wind chill below zero, and hallucinations in the dark.

🚴‍♀️ And, just to connect the stages, an extra 17.5 miles of cycling.

Incredibly, Michelle completed it all in under 3 days, with no sleep and no shortcuts.

Her story is more than an account of physical endurance—it is a lesson in grit, vision, and what can be achieved when we push ourselves beyond the point of comfort.

We are delighted that Michelle will be sharing her experiences with our pupils. Her message will inspire them not only to persevere when faced with challenges, but also to believe in their own potential to create, achieve and redefine what is possible.
