For many, it was a time of uncertainty — but for Philipp, it marked the start of an extraordinary journey that would take him from the classroom to the cockpit, and quite literally, to new heights.
That summer, Philipp enrolled at the Hillsboro Aero Academy in Portland, Oregon, beginning his intensive flight training. In under two years, he completed his Private, Instrument, and Commercial pilot licences, as well as his Flight Instructor and Instrument Flight Instructor ratings.
In the autumn of 2022, Philipp’s career took off in Los Angeles, where he worked for a small operator providing flight instruction, conducting aerial photography and filming missions, and flying tours. This experience paved the way for his next step — joining Helistream, a larger corporate flight school, where he trained Law Enforcement and Border Protection pilots.
Earlier this year, Philipp was given a remarkable opportunity: to become Second-in-Command (co-pilot) on the UH-60 Blackhawk, flying missions to fight wildfires in San Diego County. Alongside his operational duties, Philipp serves as a Safety Leader and works with the FAA Safety Team, helping to make the helicopter industry safer for all.
Reflecting on his career so far, Philipp offers advice that reaches beyond aviation:
“The most difficult part of learning to fly a helicopter is hovering — it takes time, resilience, and patience. Don’t get frustrated if life doesn’t go as planned. Embrace the challenge, enjoy the journey, and you’ll get there, even if it takes longer than expected.”
Philipp’s determination, resilience, and willingness to embrace challenges are qualities that have propelled him forward — and serve as an inspiration to our Stannite community.
Well done, Philipp. We are proud to see you flying high.
